- Often unverified. Sometimes provably false. Always emotionally loaded.
- Media and “official” accounts act in chorus, the narrative is fixed before facts can even enter the room.
This is by design. The public is trained to see first impressions as final verdicts.
3. The Execution
Once the signal is given, the swarm attacks.
- Comment sections fill with rage.
- Strangers pile on to feel virtuous.
- Companies, sponsors, and even friends cut ties instantly, not because they know the truth, but because they fear becoming the next target. There’s no trial. No evidence. No context. Just the rush to destroy before the mood shifts.
4. The Power Behind It
Cancel culture isn’t a grassroots movement, it’s the perfect crowd-control weapon.
- You don’t need police or courts when the mob will do the job for free.
- It creates fear of speaking, people self-censor to survive.
- Once trained, the mob can be turned on anyone, at any time, for any reason.
The brilliance (and horror) is that it feels like democracy in action, but it’s just mass obedience to an unseen signal.
5. History Never Left
This isn’t new.
- In the Middle Ages, it was witch hunts. One accusation, no defense, straight to the stake.
- In Stalin’s USSR, it was denunciations. A neighbor whispers your name to the state, you vanish overnight.
- In Mao’s Cultural Revolution, mobs dragged “enemies of the people” into the street to be humiliated and beaten, often for crimes that didn’t exist.
The tools have changed, hashtags instead of hammers, smartphones instead of red books, but the psychology is identical.
